Swimming Lessons for Special Needs Swimmers

Built Around the Child

Water belongs to every child

Every parent of a neurodivergent child has had the same experience: a service that says “we welcome everyone” and then, in practice, does not know what to do when your child does not respond the way the manual predicts. We are not going to pretend our swimming lessons for special needs swimmers solve every situation perfectly. We are going to tell you exactly what we do, who teaches it, and where the edges of our competence are, so you can decide whether AquaSplash is right for your family.

We accept children with autism, ADHD, asthma, and a range of other diagnoses across all three venues — Klang, Shah Alam and Puchong — in either small group settings or private one-to-one tracking. Swimming lessons for autistic swimmers are a regular part of what we do, not an exception we improvise around.

Adaptations we actually make

Sensory

Loud echo in indoor pools is a known issue; our outdoor venues mitigate this. We choose quieter time slots where possible, use visual cues alongside spoken ones, and avoid sudden whistles.

Pacing

Sessions follow the swimmer's regulation state, not the clock. Skill progression is gentler and broken into smaller steps. A Wiggler level is not a deadline.

Communication

Coaches use clear, literal language, repeat instructions in the same words, and avoid idioms. Visual schedules or first-then prompts can be incorporated for swimmers who use them at school.

Predictability

Where possible we keep the same coach session to session. Familiar coach, familiar lane, familiar order of activities. Predictability is not a luxury for many of our swimmers; it is the precondition for learning.

What We Are Equipped to Support

We are well-suited to swimmers who are on the autism spectrum across a range of profiles, have ADHD or attention regulation differences, have asthma or other respiratory conditions, are anxious in water or have sensory sensitivities, or have mild physical limitations not requiring specialist medical staff. We are not a clinical therapy provider, and we will say so honestly if a child’s needs sit outside our scope. In those cases we will refer rather than pretend.

The First Session is Different

For neurotypical beginners the first session is a skill assessment. For swimming lessons for special needs, the first session is also a meeting. Before the swimmer enters the water we talk with the parent about sensory triggers, communication preferences, what calms the child and what does not, any safety considerations, and the goals you actually have. Some parents want their child to be safe at a hotel pool. Others want strokes. Both are legitimate and we plan accordingly.

The first in-water session is shorter, quieter, and structured around exposure rather than performance. If your child needs to spend it sitting at the pool edge with the coach, that is what we do.

Before you book: the skill assessment

We see ourselves as one part of your child’s team. If your child has an occupational therapist, speech therapist, paediatrician or behavioural therapist guiding broader development, we are happy to receive notes from them and adjust accordingly. Parents are welcome to observe sessions; some children regulate better when a parent is visible, others do better when they are not. Either is fine.

Special needs swimmers use standard venue pricing for group classes. Private one-to-one and two-to-one formats, often recommended initially, are priced as per our private rates by venue. The skill assessment session (RM10) is the route to a clear quote.

Children as young as three years old are welcome to begin their swimming journey with us.
Prior swimming experience is not necessary, as our programs are thoughtfully structured to support complete beginners and those at more advanced levels.
Indeed, all new students must complete an assessment to determine their appropriate placement according to their skill level.
What is the student-to-instructor ration in each class?
The class size for the Basic level is limited to a maximum of 5 students, while the Advanced level accommodates a maximum of 6 students.
Grouping is determined by the individual’s swimming ability, rather than their age.
In the case of light rain, classes will proceed as scheduled. For heavy rain, we will notify parents via WhatsApp 30 minutes prior to the class. Any cancelled classes will be rescheduled accordingly.

A missed class may be rescheduled provided the absence meets the following criteria:

  • Illness: A medical certificate is required.
  • Emergency: Advance notification with a valid reason is necessary.
  • Vacation: Kindly inform us at least one week in advance.
The class schedule will be provided via WhatsApp. Should you require a change in timing, kindly inform the administration at least two days in advance.
Children with a pronounced fear of water may find private lessons to be more beneficial at first. This will be carefully evaluated during the assessment.
Parents are welcome to remain on-site and observe the class.
How long does it generally take acquire swimming skills?
The rate of progress dif ers for each individual; however, on average, it takes about two months to complete each level.

Our program is designed with the following structured levels:

  1. Active Start (Wigler)
  2. Fundamental (Splasher)
  3. Learn to Train (Kicker)
  4. Train to Train (Improver)
  5. Train to Compete (Traveller)
  6. Train to Win (Challenger)
Progress is recorded in our internal system, Aquasplash UDIO, and parents will receive regular updates.
Children with prior experience may be placed in a more advanced level, subject to the results of an initial assessment.
